Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a phrase that we see more and more these days, especially on products that are tech-related. So what does this phrase actually mean?
Artificial Intelligence or AI is an area of computer science that focuses on the development of "intelligent" machines that have a similar behaviour with humans. More specifically, these machines are designed to work and react like us. AI machines are used for a vast variety of activities, like:
- Learning
- Planning
- Speech recognition
- Problem solving
- Reasoning
- Perception
- Knowledge
- Manipulating or moving objects
Machine Learning (ML) is one of the main parts of AI. There are three types of learning, supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement learning (which I will probably cover in a different post). In this field, machines are trained from previous experience and attempt to identify patterns or extract features from the input data.
Knowledge engineering is another main part of AI research. In order for machines to act like humans, they need important information about the world. To implement knowledge engineering, artificial intelligence must have access to objects, properties, categories and the relations between all of them. Giving machines the power of common sense, reasoning and problem solving is not an easy task.
Machine perception is related with the capability to use sensory inputs in order to extract various objects of the world. Computer vision on the other hand, has to do with the ability to analyse visual inputs, like gesture, facial and object recognition.
A major field of AI is also robotics. Robots cannot handle tasks like object manipulation and navigation, localisation, or motion planning without intelligence.
Artificial Intelligence in now an integral part of our everyday lives, that is advancing rapidly. By learning more about AI we help ourselves embrace the future of computer science and technology.
